Help with this recipe!

Okay, this recipe is NOT diet approved. But it's delicious. Marsha, my stage manager on Murder at the Witch's Cottage, made it for our cast food table one night of the production. Is there any way to change it so that it is diet friendly? Come on, cooks, help out!

Ten Sin Dip

1 large loaf of French bread
8 oz. cream cheese
8 oz. sour cream
2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup of chopped cooked ham
1/3 cup of chopped green onions
1/3 cup of chopped green pepper
1/4 tablespoon of Worcester sauce
Paprika
Ritz crackers

Hollow out loaf. Place loaf on cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 12 minutes. Beat cream cheese until smooth. Add sour cream and beat. Stir in cheese and then the rest of the ingredients. Pour into bread shell. Wrap the bread in foil and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Sprinkle with paprika. Serve with Ritz crackers.

Oh yum! Just in time for me to use for my Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow night!

Modify:

Use fat-free cream cheese, fat-free sour cream, fat-free cheddar cheese. Use vegetables to dip with instead of the Ritz crackers. The rest is pretty much OK -- you might also use low-sodium ham.

Resist eating the bread in excess.

She beat me to it! I was going to suggest the same things and it would be just as yummy!

A caveat: When I make my sour cream chicken enchiladas, the fat-free sour cream gets too runny when they're baked, so I only dial it down to light. The same might happen with fat-free cream cheese.

Unless the bread is absolutely necessary, you could probably forego it altogether. Maybe just bake the dip in a covered casserole dish.

It would probably be good with Sun Chips, too.

Trixie, the veggie idea is great!

Michelle, I think those changes shouldn't change the taste too much.

FF, the bread actually is just a bowl. It makes a nice presentation, but cooking it in a dish would work, too.

I'm with Frenzied -- I'd only dial it down to the low-fat dairy products. Fat-free cream cheese is probably alright, but fat-free sour cream tastes funny, and fat-free shredded cheese doesn't melt well (if at all).

Thanks for this recipe, Tech. I made it for my singles' group Thanksgiving dinner and retreat Friday night/Saturday. People raved about it -- it was the one thing people were fighting about to take home with them! I left it at the hosts' home but I wish I had it right now!
